Punjab, Chandigarh Brace for More Rain as Monsoon Remains Active; IMD Extends Weather Alert Till July 9

Chandigarh (Gurpreet Singh): Heavy showers cool temperatures across the region; authorities urge caution amid thunderstorm forecast

Monsoon activity continues to dominate the weather across Punjab and Chandigarh, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting more rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds over the next few days. The weather office has indicated that the current wet spell is likely to continue until July 9, prompting authorities to remain on alert.

Several districts received rainfall over the past 24 hours, helping bring down temperatures and offering relief from persistent humidity. While the showers improved weather conditions for residents, they also caused waterlogging and minor disruptions in some areas.

In Gurdaspur district, intense rainfall led to the overflow of water after a damaged embankment gave way, allowing water to enter nearby agricultural land. Officials said the situation has improved as water levels have started falling, though farmers have expressed concern over crop damage. Local residents also pointed out that the embankment had suffered damage during last year’s monsoon and had not undergone permanent strengthening.

According to the IMD, districts including Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, Rupnagar, Mohali, Fatehgarh Sahib and Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar are likely to witness fresh spells of rain along with thunderstorms and winds reaching 40 to 50 kmph. A Yellow Alert remains in place for these areas.

Weather records show that Gurdaspur received the highest rainfall during the latest spell, followed by Pathankot and several other districts, including Faridkot, Mohali, Patiala and Amritsar. Chandigarh also experienced moderate rainfall, contributing to a noticeable fall in daytime temperatures.

The cooler weather has also been reflected in temperature readings across the state. Several districts recorded temperatures below the seasonal average, while Bathinda reported one of the lowest night temperatures in Punjab. Chandigarh also witnessed a significant dip compared to earlier in the week.

Meanwhile, rain-related damage was reported in Chandigarh after a portion of a building at an educational institution collapsed. Officials confirmed that the structure had already been declared unsafe and had been closed, preventing any injuries.

The Meteorological Department has advised residents to remain vigilant during periods of heavy rain and lightning. People have been asked to avoid standing in open spaces during thunderstorms, stay away from electricity poles and large trees, and avoid driving through flooded roads wherever possible.

With forecasts indicating continued rainfall over the coming days, district administrations have been instructed to monitor vulnerable locations, keep drainage systems operational and remain prepared to respond quickly to any weather-related emergencies.
