Bhogapuram (Gurpreet Singh): Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport at Bhogapuram in Vizianagaram district on Saturday, marking a significant milestone in the expansion of aviation infrastructure across Andhra Pradesh. Constructed under a Public-Private Partnership model with an overall investment exceeding ₹5,640 crore, the greenfield airport has been designed to manage an initial annual capacity of 60 lakh passengers in its first phase. Situated near Visakhapatnam, the strategic facility is positioned to enhance regional air connectivity, boost commercial trade, and stimulate long-term economic growth throughout the coastal region.
The passenger terminal architecture combines modern infrastructure with local cultural motifs, drawing inspiration from traditional regional Chuttilu cottages and the scenic landscapes of the Araku Valley. The flowing roof design reflects the movement of a flying fish, pairing regional architectural heritage with contemporary design standards. Registered with the United States Green Building Council and constructed in accordance with international green building standards, the facility incorporates sustainable infrastructure such as energy-efficient heating and cooling systems, smart building management solutions, rainwater harvesting, electric vehicle charging facilities, and an integrated five-megawatt solar power plant.
Equipped with advanced operational infrastructure, the terminal utilizes Artificial Intelligence, Building Information Modelling, Airside 4.0 systems, automated baggage handling, biometric passenger processing, and an Airport Predictive Operations Centre to streamline passenger movement and improve facility security. The establishment of this aviation hub is expected to create extensive employment opportunities, encourage regional investments, and support tourism throughout Andhra Pradesh.
