Jalandhar (Gurpreet Singh): A routine drive through Jalandhar turned into a frightening ordeal after a newly purchased Swift Dzire caught fire while in motion on the Pathankot Bypass flyover. The vehicle was completely destroyed within minutes, although its occupants managed to get out safely before the flames intensified.
The couple was reportedly on their way to visit an ailing family member admitted to a local hospital when smoke suddenly began emerging from the vehicle. Realising the danger, they quickly abandoned the car, moments before it was engulfed by fire.
Eyewitnesses said the blaze spread rapidly, leaving little chance to save the vehicle. The car’s interior, including the seats, steering wheel and dashboard, was reduced to ashes as thick smoke billowed into the sky. Several motorists and local residents attempted to douse the flames using portable fire extinguishers and water, but the fire proved too intense.
Fire department personnel reached the spot after being alerted and managed to bring the situation under control after a prolonged operation. By then, however, the vehicle had been completely gutted. The couple was later taken to a nearby private hospital for a precautionary medical examination and is reported to be in stable condition.
Police officials who arrived at the scene initiated an investigation into the incident. Preliminary findings suggest that an electrical short circuit may have triggered the fire, though a detailed technical inspection is underway to determine the exact cause.
The incident also sparked criticism from local residents over inadequate safety measures on the flyover. They pointed to poor lighting conditions and the absence of warning barricades or reflective markers around the burnt vehicle, arguing that such lapses could have led to a secondary accident involving passing traffic.
The episode serves as another reminder of the importance of regular vehicle inspections and swift emergency response systems, especially on busy urban roads where mechanical failures can escalate into life-threatening situations within moments.
