Kedarnath Yatra Begins as Panchmukhi Palanquin Sets Out from Omkareshwar Temple

Rajeev Sharma :- The annual pilgrimage to Kedarnath Dham commenced on Sunday with the ceremonial departure of the Panchmukhi palanquin of Lord Kedarnath from the Omkareshwar Temple, marking the formal start of the revered Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand.

The occasion witnessed elaborate religious rituals, Vedic chants and a large turnout of devotees, priests and officials. Among those present was Kedarnath Rawal Bhimashankar Ling, who participated in the traditional ceremonies held before the departure of the palanquin.

The palanquin will travel over several days, halting at designated points en route to the shrine. As per the schedule, it will reach Phata on April 19, Gaurikund on April 20, and finally Kedarnath Dham on April 21. The temple doors are set to open for devotees on April 22 at 8 am following customary rituals.

Vishal Mishra, CEO of the Badri-Kedar Temple Committee and District Magistrate of Rudraprayag, said that all necessary arrangements have been put in place to ensure a smooth and safe pilgrimage. He added that directions have been issued by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami to prioritise the safety and convenience of pilgrims.

The beginning of the Kedarnath Yatra coincides with the launch of the Char Dham pilgrimage circuit, which also includes Yamunotri, Gangotri and Badrinath. Earlier in the day, the palanquins of Goddess Yamuna and Goddess Ganga were also ceremonially flagged off from Kharsali and Bhairavghati, respectively.

A festive spirit has gripped Uttarakhand, with temples decorated and devotees arriving in large numbers. The Char Dham Yatra 2026 was formally inaugurated by the Chief Minister in Rishikesh a day earlier, with wishes for a safe and spiritually enriching journey for all pilgrims.
