Jagtar Singh Hawara moves High Court seeking four-week parole to care for ailing mother

Gurpreet Singh :- Jagtar Singh Hawara, convicted in the former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh assassination case, has approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court seeking four weeks’ parole on humanitarian grounds. In his petition, Hawara stated that he wished to take care of his ailing mother, who is suffering from multiple age-related ailments.

Hawara submitted before the court that he has been lodged in jail for the past 28 years and nine months and had never earlier applied for parole. He informed the court that his 81-year-old mother is suffering from Parkinson’s disease and hypertension, and her deteriorating health condition necessitated his temporary release.

The petition also challenged the continuation of his incarceration without parole, seeking interim relief from the court. Hawara is presently lodged in Mandoli Central Jail in Delhi.

During the hearing, the Punjab and Haryana High Court sought responses from the concerned authorities. In its reply, the Chandigarh Administration stated that since Hawara is currently imprisoned in Delhi, the parole plea should appropriately be moved before the competent authorities there.

The matter is expected to come up for further hearing after the replies of all concerned agencies are placed before the court.
