Rajeev Sharma :- Amid continuing tensions between Iran and the United States, diplomatic engagement appears to be moving through backchannel efforts, with Tehran reportedly sending a fresh peace proposal to Washington aimed at de-escalation. While there are no formal indications of a second round of direct talks, sources suggest that negotiations are quietly underway to explore a possible resolution.
According to inputs, Iran’s latest proposal places key conditions, including the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a ceasefire, and the lifting of economic sanctions. Notably, Tehran has suggested deferring discussions on its nuclear programme to a later stage, signalling a shift in its negotiation strategy. Iranian officials have indicated that talks on a nuclear deal would only commence after the restoration of maritime access and the complete removal of sanctions.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has reportedly conveyed to mediators that there is no internal consensus within Iran’s leadership regarding US demands on enriched uranium, particularly those associated with former US President Donald Trump’s position. Tehran has also insisted on an immediate end to hostilities and firm guarantees against future attacks as part of any agreement.
The proposal is understood to have reached the White House, though there has been no official response so far. In parallel diplomatic moves, Araghchi held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier this week, where Moscow reiterated its support for Iran. The Iranian side maintained that current developments have underscored the importance of its strategic allies.
The situation remains fluid, with diplomatic channels active but uncertainty prevailing over whether the latest proposal can pave the way for a broader settlement.
