Indian Para-Athletics Mourns Neeraj Yadav, Three-Time Asian Para Games Gold Medallist

New Delhi (Rajeev Sharma): Neeraj Yadav, an accomplished Indian para-athlete who won three gold medals at the Asian Para Games, has died at the age of 42 after reportedly consuming poison at his residence. A post-mortem examination was being conducted at a Delhi hospital on Wednesday as authorities worked to establish the circumstances surrounding his death.

S Satyanarayana, head coach of India’s para-athletics team, confirmed the death and expressed grief over the loss. He said he had received news of the incident but that Yadav’s body remained at the hospital.

The athlete’s death comes after he missed the Asian Para Games in Aichi-Nagoya earlier this month because of a doping suspension. Reports indicated that he had been experiencing emotional distress following the development, although the exact circumstances behind his death remain unconfirmed.

A Distinguished Career in Para-Athletics

Yadav made his mark on the international stage through his performances in throwing events. He won his first Asian Para Games gold medal in javelin at the 2018 edition in Jakarta.

Five years later, he delivered another strong performance at the Hangzhou Games in 2023, securing gold medals in both javelin and discus. His three titles made him one of India’s notable performers in the competition.

He competed in the F55 category, which features seated field events, including javelin, discus and shot put.

Overcoming Early Physical Challenges

Yadav was diagnosed with post-polio residual paralysis when he was seven years old. He initially pursued wheelchair tennis before turning to para-athletics, where he eventually achieved international recognition.

His sporting journey included years of competition and success, culminating in multiple medals at one of the major multi-sport events for athletes with disabilities in Asia.

Questions Remain Over Circumstances of Death

Satyanarayana said it would be inappropriate to speculate about the specific reasons behind the incident. The post-mortem examination and further inquiries are expected to help clarify the circumstances.

Yadav’s reported emotional distress following his exclusion from the recent Games has drawn attention to the pressures athletes can face when dealing with professional setbacks. However, no confirmed link has been established between the suspension and his death.

His passing represents a significant loss for Indian para-sport, where his performances in Jakarta and Hangzhou had brought him considerable recognition.
