Leh (Rajeev Sharma): Indian Army Aviation crews carried out a challenging casualty evacuation near Nun Kun at an altitude of approximately 18,600 feet, overcoming strong winds, steep terrain and the absence of a conventional landing zone.
The rescue required the pilots to operate within extremely narrow safety margins as they attempted to reach the casualty on a difficult mountain slope.
Helicopter stripped down to reduce weight
With aircraft performance severely affected at such extreme altitude, the crew adopted measures to reduce the helicopter’s weight.
Non-essential equipment was removed and only limited fuel was carried for the mission. The reduced load helped the aircraft operate in the demanding conditions and improved the chances of reaching the casualty.
The pilots then attempted a carefully controlled approach towards the steep slope. In a critical manoeuvre, one skid was placed against the mountain slope, enabling the evacuation to be completed despite the lack of a proper landing surface.
Strong winds added to challenge
The operation was made even more difficult by strong winds and rugged high-altitude terrain.
At nearly 18,600 feet, even small changes in conditions can significantly affect helicopter performance. With no suitable landing area available, the pilots had to rely on precision and careful judgement to position the aircraft safely.
The mission was undertaken during the last available landing window of the day, making the timing of the evacuation crucial.
