France (Rajeev Sharma): Strategic ties between India and the United States received a significant boost after US President Donald Trump expressed unwavering support for India during his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in France. The leaders discussed a wide range of issues, including defence cooperation, trade, maritime security and regional stability.
Addressing the media after their talks, Trump indicated that the United States would stand with India in the event of any external threat, underscoring the close partnership that has developed between the two democracies over the years. His remarks reflected Washington’s commitment to strengthening strategic cooperation with New Delhi amid evolving global security challenges.
The meeting also highlighted progress in economic engagement, with both leaders expressing optimism over the ongoing negotiations for a bilateral trade agreement. Trump suggested that discussions had reached an advanced stage and praised Prime Minister Modi for his negotiating skills, describing him as a leader who firmly safeguards his country’s interests.
Prime Minister Modi welcomed the recent diplomatic initiatives aimed at reducing tensions in West Asia and appreciated efforts to promote peace and stability in the region. He stressed that uninterrupted navigation through the Strait of Hormuz remains essential for global trade and energy security, adding that stable maritime routes are in the interest of the international community.
The Prime Minister also raised concerns regarding the safety of Indian seafarers working aboard commercial vessels operating in sensitive waters. He expressed hope that measures taken under emerging regional agreements would ensure greater protection for maritime workers.
Responding to the issue, Trump conveyed his condolences over the loss of Indian sailors in recent incidents and reaffirmed the importance of cooperation in safeguarding international shipping lanes.
The US President also acknowledged India’s growing influence in global affairs, saying the country is expected to play an increasingly important role in addressing regional and international challenges. Recalling his earlier visits to India, Trump spoke positively about the warmth he received and reiterated his admiration for the country’s leadership and people.
Modi, meanwhile, observed that bilateral relations have expanded significantly in recent years, with both governments working closely to accelerate cooperation in key sectors such as defence, advanced technology, innovation and commerce.
On the margins of the summit, the Prime Minister also held separate discussions with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and senior leaders of the European Union. The meetings focused on enhancing collaboration in trade, clean energy, education, technology and industrial partnerships while reviewing progress on broader strategic initiatives.
Diplomatic observers believe the series of engagements at the G7 Summit reflects India’s growing international stature and its policy of building strong partnerships with multiple global powers. The interactions are expected to contribute to deeper economic cooperation and reinforce India’s role as a key player in shaping the future of global security and development.
As geopolitical dynamics continue to evolve, the meeting between Trump and Modi is likely to be viewed as another important milestone in the expanding India-US partnership, with both nations signalling their intent to work more closely on issues of shared strategic importance.
