Glasgow (Rajeev Sharma): India celebrated a double podium finish in the men’s javelin throw at the Commonwealth Games 2026, with Neeraj Chopra winning the silver medal and Yashvir Singh producing a remarkable late effort to clinch bronze in a thrilling final.
Returning to major competition after recovering from a back injury, Chopra registered his best throw of the season with an effort of 85.83 metres. The performance earned the Olympic champion second place despite difficult weather conditions marked by strong winds and low temperatures.
The gold medal went to Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage, whose impressive throw of 89.75 metres in the second round remained unbeaten throughout the event. The Sri Lankan athlete once again underlined his dominance in the discipline with another top-class performance.
One of the standout moments of the competition came from Yashvir Singh, who delivered a career-best 85.41-metre throw on his sixth and final attempt. The massive effort lifted the young Indian from outside the medal positions to third place, earning him a bronze medal in his maiden Commonwealth Games appearance.
Speaking after the event, Chopra said he was encouraged by his progress and believed his fitness was gradually improving after the injury setback. He added that upcoming Diamond League events and the Asian Games would provide more opportunities to regain his best form.
Yashvir expressed delight over achieving a personal best on such a big stage, calling it a memorable moment to share the podium with one of India’s greatest athletes.
India’s Rohit Yadav also featured in the final and finished seventh after recording a best throw of 81.56 metres.
The event saw athletes from South Asia dominate the medal standings, with Sri Lanka claiming gold and India securing both the silver and bronze medals. The result further boosted India’s athletics campaign at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games and highlighted the country’s growing depth in the javelin throw event.
