Thailand (Rajeev Sharma): Thailand Law enforcement agencies have arrested five individuals, including two residents from Punjab’s Jalandhar and Amritsar districts, for their involvement in the abduction, illegal confinement, and extortion of three young Indian tourists. The victims, aged between 23 and 26, were reportedly enticed to travel to Thailand through a fraudulent low-cost holiday package before being taken hostage in a residential property in Pattaya.
The arrested suspects have been identified by authorities as Avtar Singh (38) from Jalandhar, Jagjit Singh (38) from Amritsar, Rambalak Kumar (28) from Bihar, Sukhbir Singh (37), and Kulra Singh (27). Representative leaders from the Indian Community Eastern (ICE) Thailand, including President Lakshman Singh and Public Relations Officer Navdeep Singh, confirmed that local police are actively investigating the network’s broader operations, potential links to prior tourist abductions, and the destination of previously collected ransom funds.
The rescue operation was executed on July 27 through a joint raid conducted by Chonburi Immigration Police and Pattaya Police at a two-storey townhouse in Nong Prue, located within the Bang Lamung area. Officers freed the three victims from separate second-floor rooms, where they were found bound with ropes and cable ties, with tape applied over their mouths to prevent them from raising alarms. During the search, investigators recovered physical evidence including restraint items, wooden objects, and red spray paint, which the gang allegedly applied to the victims to simulate severe injuries in photographic and video evidence sent to family members in India to coerce rapid ransom payments.
According to initial statements, the tourists arrived at Suvarnabhumi Airport on July 21 under a pre-arranged tour itinerary before being transported directly to the Pattaya townhouse, where they were held captive and physically assaulted. The victims also informed investigators that another Indian national had been held at the same location prior to their arrival and was released only after his family transferred approximately 3 million rupees in ransom. Community representatives Naresh Chandra, Cindy, Gurcharanjit Singh, Ravi Kant, and Amit Sharma from ICE Thailand assisted local authorities with logistics and coordination during the operation, while formal updates were transmitted to the Indian Embassy in Bangkok to monitor ongoing legal proceedings.
