Ferozepur (Gurpreet Singh): An Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader was killed and another man critically injured after unidentified masked men allegedly opened fire in Mamdot town of Ferozepur district on Sunday morning.
The deceased has been identified as 45-year-old Gurpreet Singh. Harpreet Singh, who was also caught in the firing, sustained serious injuries and was initially taken to the Civil Hospital before being referred to another hospital for further treatment.
According to preliminary information, the attackers arrived on a motorcycle and targeted a group that included people travelling in a car as well as individuals on another motorcycle. The assailants allegedly fired multiple rounds before escaping from the area.
The incident came to the attention of authorities after the injured were taken to the Civil Hospital at around 8 am. A doctor at the facility said Gurpreet Singh was brought in after sustaining gunshot wounds but had already died by then. The second injured person was referred to another medical centre because of his critical condition.
CCTV footage being examined
Ferozepur SSP Bhupinder Singh visited the location after the shooting and took stock of the situation. Police teams have started examining CCTV recordings from nearby locations in an effort to identify the movements of the attackers and reconstruct the incident.
The SSP said the police had identified the suspected accused but did not reveal their identities or other details while the investigation remains in progress.
Election dispute suspected
According to the SSP, the initial investigation has indicated a possible connection between the shooting and rivalry related to elections. However, police have not yet established the motive conclusively.
Investigators are examining available evidence and gathering information from people connected with the incident. The circumstances surrounding the alleged rivalry and whether it directly led to the attack will be determined as the probe progresses.
Police are continuing efforts to trace the accused and establish the exact sequence of events that culminated in the fatal shooting.
