Washington (Rajeev Sharma): US President Donald Trump has said global oil prices are likely to decline once the ongoing conflict with Iran comes to an end, while claiming that Washington is currently gaining the upper hand in the war.
Speaking about the conflict, Trump said oil prices would come down “as soon as we win the war with Iran”, asserting that the United States was making progress in the confrontation.
Trump also made a provocative suggestion concerning the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, joking that the waterway should be renamed the “Trump Strait.” He appeared to acknowledge that Iran’s leadership would not welcome the idea.
The president further took aim at Iran’s leadership, saying he did not believe Iranian officials were pleased with the situation and portraying the country as facing severe internal difficulties.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important energy corridors, connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. Any prolonged disruption in the waterway can have significant consequences for global crude supplies and energy prices.
Trump’s remarks come amid heightened tensions surrounding the US-Iran conflict, with developments in the region continuing to fuel uncertainty in international energy markets. His comments linking the eventual outcome of the war with lower oil prices underline the wider economic stakes of the confrontation.
The remarks also add a striking political dimension to the increasingly tense rhetoric between Washington and Tehran, as both sides remain locked in a confrontation with implications extending well beyond the Middle East.
