Delhi (Rajeev Sharma): The death of a 28-year-old woman in Delhi has triggered a police investigation after her family rejected the possibility of suicide and demanded that the case be treated as murder. The deceased, Akriti Sutar, who had married just over two months ago, was found dead near a residential society in Lodhi Colony on Saturday night.
According to her relatives, Akriti had resumed work the same day after being on leave following her marriage in April. They said she spent the day with colleagues, even hosting a small gathering at her workplace before leaving for home. Her family believes these events indicate that she was leading a normal life and had shown no signs of emotional distress.
Family members said Akriti spoke to her mother over the phone during the evening and discussed her first day back at work. They claimed she sounded happy and made no mention of any problem before ending the call.
Later that night, the family received information from her husband stating that she could not be contacted. Some time afterwards, police informed them that a woman’s body matching Akriti’s description had been discovered near a residential complex several kilometres away from her home.
The family has alleged that Akriti had been facing harassment after her marriage over dowry-related demands. They claimed repeated pressure had been exerted on her and alleged that relations between the couple had become strained in recent weeks. According to them, there had also been a heated argument shortly before the incident.
Relatives further alleged that the deceased had shared details of the alleged harassment with them on multiple occasions. They insist these allegations must be thoroughly investigated before any conclusion is drawn regarding the nature of her death.
Police have registered the case and stated that investigators are examining every possible angle. Statements of family members and others connected to the case are being recorded, while forensic evidence and the post-mortem report are expected to play a key role in establishing the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Officials have maintained that no conclusion has been reached so far and that the investigation will proceed based on scientific evidence and witness accounts.
