Washington (Rajeev Sharma): Cristiano Ronaldo delivered another memorable performance on the global stage, helping Portugal overcome Croatia 2-1 in the FIFA World Cup Round of 32 while setting a new tournament record that further cements his legendary status.

The Portugal skipper converted a penalty in the second half to become the oldest footballer ever to score in a men’s FIFA World Cup knockout match. The goal was particularly special as it marked the first time Ronaldo has found the net in a World Cup knockout fixture during his illustrious international career.

Portugal controlled large portions of the contest but faced a spirited challenge from Croatia, who fought until the closing moments. The Croatians thought they had rescued the match late on, but their effort was ruled out, allowing Portugal to secure its place in the Round of 16.

The latest achievement adds another milestone to Ronaldo’s already unmatched international résumé. At 41 years of age, the Portuguese forward continues to compete at the highest level, proving his longevity in world football remains extraordinary.

Ronaldo’s appearance also moved him closer to another landmark, as he added another World Cup match to his tally and edged nearer to the all-time record for most appearances in the tournament.

Even before kick-off, the veteran striker had entered the record books by becoming the oldest outfield player to start a men’s World Cup knockout encounter. The match also featured Croatia captain Luka Modrić, making it a rare occasion where two players over the age of 40 started for opposing teams in a World Cup fixture.

The victory keeps Portugal’s title hopes alive as they advance to the last 16, with Ronaldo once again proving decisive on football’s biggest stage. Despite persistent speculation over when he might retire from international football, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner continues to play a leading role for his country and remains determined to guide Portugal deeper into the tournament.

With another World Cup record now to his name, Ronaldo has once again demonstrated that age has done little to diminish his ability to influence the biggest matches in international football.
