Chandigarh (Gurpreet Singh): Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann formally introduced a confidence motion during a special session of the state assembly this Friday, aiming to solidify his administration’s standing amid a flurry of political speculation. Speaking in Chandigarh on the occasion of International Labour Day, Mann directly addressed the recent reports of internal friction, remarking that various rumours have been intentionally spread to cast doubt on the stability of the provincial government. He maintained that the overwhelming mandate granted by the people of Punjab is not easily shaken and that his party remains a unified force dedicated to the state’s progress.
The move for a floor test follows a period of significant political movement, most notably the transition of several Rajya Sabha members to the opposition benches earlier in the week. The ruling party has characterized these events as part of a renewed “Operation Lotus” effort to fracture the assembly’s majority through external pressure. By initiating the motion, Mann sought to provide a clear and public demonstration of his government’s numerical strength, effectively challenging the narrative that the administration was on the verge of a split.
The proceedings were not without conflict, as the opposition, headed by Partap Singh Bajwa, voiced strong objections to the session’s agenda. Opposition leaders argued that the confidence motion was a redundant exercise in political theatre, intended to distract from more pressing governance issues. The debate eventually culminated in a walkout by the Congress party after several intense verbal confrontations. Despite the disruption, the Chief Minister stayed the course, utilizing the platform to reinforce his party’s commitment to democratic integrity and transparent leadership.
Beyond the political maneuvering, the session served as a backdrop for a significant social announcement regarding the provincial labour force. In honour of Labour Day, the Chief Minister unveiled a 15 per cent hike in the minimum wage, which increases the daily rate for workers from 483 to over 555 rupees. Mann emphasized that while his critics remain preoccupied with political schemes, his government is focusing on the economic well-being of the common citizen. This strategic announcement helped the administration regain the initiative, framing the special session as a win for the working class as well as a confirmation of political stability.
The formal assertion of confidence is expected to stabilize the political environment in Chandigarh as the state heads toward local elections. By successfully navigating the challenge in the Vidhan Sabha, the Chief Minister has sent a firm signal to both his supporters and opponents regarding his control over the legislative agenda. As the assembly concluded its business for the day, the focus shifted from the “rumours” of instability to the practical implementation of the newly announced wage reforms and the ongoing governance of the province.
