New Delhi (Gurpreet Singh): Chief Justice of India Surya Kant addressed the legal fraternity on Saturday during the 80th Independence Day celebrations organized by the Supreme Court Bar Association, calling upon young lawyers and law graduates to prepare themselves to shoulder future constitutional responsibilities. Speaking after unfurling the national flag on the apex court premises in New Delhi, the Chief Justice emphasized that India’s eight-decade journey has seen the country overcome formidable challenges, noting that every milestone brings an added duty to advance the delivery of justice.
The Chief Justice highlighted the legal community’s historic role in the Indian freedom movement, pointing out that foundational figures including Mahatma Gandhi, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Motilal Nehru, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, and Lala Lajpat Rai were lawyers. He underscored that India’s struggle for independence was fundamentally distinct from armed insurrections elsewhere, serving instead as a sustained challenge to colonial authority mounted through petitions, public debate, and the language of law to assert the essential values of liberty, equality, and human dignity.
Turning his focus to the contemporary challenges confronting entry-level advocates, the top judge acknowledged that modern legal practice has become increasingly competitive with steeper learning curves and heightened early-career pressures. However, he expressed confidence in the younger generation’s resilience, technological adaptability, and sharp commitment to social justice, reassuring junior practitioners that both the Bar and the Bench remain committed to providing mentorship and expanding professional opportunities.
