Arabian Sea (Rajeev Sharma): The United States has redirected 83 commercial vessels as part of its ongoing efforts to enforce a blockade against Iran, according to the US Central Command (CENTCOM).
In an update issued on August 30, CENTCOM said its forces had taken action against commercial shipping operating in the region. Besides the 83 vessels that were redirected, three ships were reportedly disabled and two others were boarded as part of the enforcement operation.
The US military command also released an image showing a sailor guiding an MH-60S Sea Hawk helicopter onto the flight deck of the USS Delbert D. Black (DDG 119). The destroyer was operating in the Arabian Sea during the reported maritime operations.
CENTCOM details maritime actions
According to CENTCOM, the measures were undertaken to ensure that commercial vessels complied with the US blockade against Iran. The figures provide an indication of the extent of the maritime enforcement activity being carried out by American forces.
The Arabian Sea is a major maritime corridor connecting the Middle East with important international shipping routes. Any disruption or military enforcement activity in the region can therefore have implications for commercial shipping and wider maritime security.
The latest CENTCOM statement comes amid continuing tensions surrounding Iran and increased military activity in waters near the region. The US command has not provided further details about the individual vessels involved in the operations.
