Surrey (Richa Walia): New Westminster is preparing to welcome a major celebration of Bengali heritage this October as Bongmilanti presents Durga Puja 2026, bringing together families, friends and community members for three days of tradition, devotion, music and cultural connection.
Taking place from October 10 to 12 at New Westminster Secondary School, the celebration is more than a religious observance, it will provide an important opportunity for Bengali families across Metro Vancouver to maintain cultural traditions, introduce younger generations to their heritage and strengthen connections within the community.
For many Bengali families living away from their homeland, Durga Puja serves as an important annual gathering point where generations come together through worship, food, music, cultural traditions and shared community experiences. Bongmilanti’s celebration is expected to create that sense of belonging while welcoming others interested in experiencing Bengali culture.
The festivities will combine traditional Puja observances with cultural programming and community gatherings. Families and community members will have an opportunity to meet, reconnect and celebrate their heritage in a shared setting.
A major highlight will arrive on October 11 with the Durga Puja Concert, featuring Somlata and The Aces along with Mayabano. The concert will bring a strong musical dimension to the celebration while creating another gathering point for the Bengali community and wider Metro Vancouver audience.
The program will also feature “Probaashe Bangali Adda,” reflecting the experience of Bengalis living abroad and providing an opportunity for community members to connect, exchange stories and celebrate their shared cultural identity.
The three-day celebration comes at a time when cultural communities across Metro Vancouver continue to build spaces where heritage, language, traditions and family connections can be passed from one generation to the next. Bongmilanti’s Durga Puja 2026 will place that community connection at the heart of its New Westminster gathering.
