Amritsar Police Recover Additional 5 Kg Heroin, Arrest Two More in Major Cross-Border Drug Smuggling Case

Amritsar (Gurpreet Singh): : Continuing its crackdown on cross-border drug trafficking under the Punjab Government’s anti-drug campaign, the Amritsar Commissionerate Police has arrested two more accused, including a juvenile, and recovered an additional 5.041 kg of heroin in two separate operations linked to the recent 30 kg heroin seizure case.

With the latest recovery, the total heroin seized in the case has crossed 35 kg, marking another significant breakthrough in Punjab Police’s ongoing efforts to dismantle drug smuggling networks operating across the international border.

According to Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav, the newly arrested accused has been identified as Abhishek alias Abhi alias Bhindi (25), a resident of Chheharta in Amritsar. A juvenile has also been apprehended in connection with the case. Police records indicate that Abhishek has a criminal history involving cases registered under the NDPS Act, Arms Act, snatching and assault-related offences.

The latest arrests come days after the apprehension of six individuals, including Gautam, Kabir alias Kaku, Sameer alias Sabharwal, Gurpreet alias Keeda and two juveniles, from whose possession 30.045 kg of heroin was recovered earlier this week.

DGP Gaurav Yadav said investigations have revealed links between the accused and a Dubai-based drug smuggler allegedly involved in facilitating heroin consignments smuggled across the border into Punjab. He said efforts are underway to establish both backward and forward linkages in the case to identify other members of the network, trace financial transactions and uncover possible hawala connections.

Sharing details of the operation, Amritsar Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said police teams recovered an additional 2.006 kg of heroin from the possession of accused Kabir alias Kaku based on leads developed during the investigation. Further action led to the arrest of two more associates connected to the smuggling module.

In another operation, police received information regarding an accident involving Vanshdeep Singh, an alleged operative of the network whose name surfaced during the interrogation of arrested accused Abhishek. Acting swiftly, police reached the location and shifted the injured individual to a hospital for treatment.

During the search of Vanshdeep Singh’s Activa scooter, police recovered 3.035 kg of heroin. Preliminary investigations revealed that he had been released on bail from Central Jail, Amritsar, in February 2025.

Police officials said Vanshdeep Singh will be formally arrested once he is declared medically fit by doctors.

According to investigators, the Dubai-based smuggler, who is already wanted in three separate NDPS cases, allegedly shared the locations of drug consignments with local operatives. The accused would then retrieve the consignments from designated drop points and distribute them to various recipients across the region.

Punjab Police said further investigations are ongoing to identify additional members of the network and expose the wider drug trafficking ecosystem.

A fresh case has been registered under FIR No. 131 dated June 14, 2026, under Sections 21-C and 25 of the NDPS Act at Police Station Chheharta in Amritsar.
