Alberta Opens Student Aid Applications, Commits Over $1 Billion to Higher Education Support

Calgary (Rajeev Sharma): Students planning to pursue post-secondary education in Alberta will soon be able to apply for financial assistance as the provincial government prepares to open applications for the 2026-27 academic year on June 3.

The government has announced an investment exceeding $1 billion in student aid, aimed at helping learners manage education costs through a combination of loans, grants, scholarships and awards. Officials say the funding is intended to ensure more Albertans can access and complete post-secondary studies despite ongoing financial pressures.

As part of the upcoming academic year, Alberta is increasing the amount of non-repayable assistance available to eligible students. The province is also revising how financial need is assessed, introducing changes that take parental or spousal contributions into account for certain applicants. The updated approach is designed to better reflect a student’s overall financial circumstances and direct support toward those with the greatest need.

Provincial officials noted that the changes bring Alberta’s system more closely in line with the Canada Student Financial Assistance Program and practices followed in many other provinces.

Students applying through Alberta Student Aid will continue to benefit from a streamlined process. A single application will automatically assess eligibility for both provincial and federal loans as well as available grants, reducing paperwork and simplifying access to support.

Applications can be submitted online beginning June 3 through Alberta Student Aid accounts. Students may be asked to provide additional documentation depending on their circumstances.

The government is encouraging applicants to submit their forms at least two months before the start of their studies to avoid delays in receiving funding.

Officials say continued investment in student aid is not only intended to support learners and families but also to help build a skilled workforce for Alberta’s future. By making education more accessible, the province aims to strengthen economic growth, support career development and create opportunities for students from diverse financial backgrounds.
