Alberta Marks Pride Month with Renewed Support for LGBTQ+ Community

Calgary (Rajeev Sharma): The Alberta government has marked the beginning of Pride Month by reaffirming its support for LGBTQ+ communities across the province and recognizing the contributions of individuals who continue to promote inclusion and equality.

In a statement issued on June 1, Arts, Culture and Status of Women Minister Tanya Fir said Pride Month serves as an opportunity to celebrate the diversity of Alberta while acknowledging the role LGBTQ+ individuals play in strengthening communities throughout the province.

The minister emphasized the government’s commitment to fostering an environment where people feel respected and valued regardless of their identity or whom they love. She noted that Pride Month not only celebrates achievements within the LGBTQ+ community but also highlights the importance of continuing efforts toward inclusion and acceptance.

As part of the observance, the Alberta government is encouraging residents to participate in the nomination process for the Stars of Alberta Volunteer Awards. The awards include a category dedicated to recognizing individuals who advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, support community members and work to combat discrimination.

Nominations for the awards remain open until June 30, with officials encouraging Albertans to recognize local leaders and volunteers who have made a meaningful impact through their advocacy and service.

To formally launch Pride Month activities, Pride flags are being raised at two provincial government sites — the Queen Elizabeth II Building in Edmonton and the McDougall Centre in Calgary. The flag-raising ceremonies are intended to symbolize solidarity with LGBTQ+ Albertans and celebrate the province’s diversity.

Pride Month is observed annually in June in many parts of Canada and around the world. The month is marked by community events, educational initiatives, cultural programs and celebrations that recognize the history, achievements and ongoing contributions of LGBTQ+ individuals.

Government officials said the observance reflects a broader commitment to creating welcoming communities and ensuring all Albertans feel included and supported.
