Edmonton (Rajeev Sharma): The Alberta government has stepped in to halt proposed changes to alcohol pricing in bars and restaurants, directing the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission (AGLC) to maintain the existing pricing structure.
The move comes after concerns were raised about the potential impact of revised minimum pricing rules on businesses operating in the hospitality sector. Provincial officials said the decision was made to provide greater stability and predictability for both business owners and consumers.
Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction Minister Dale Nally announced that the government had instructed AGLC to immediately reverse the planned adjustment. He emphasized the importance of creating a consistent business environment, particularly for establishments that rely heavily on food, beverage and tourism-related revenue.
The hospitality industry plays a significant role in Alberta’s economy, supporting thousands of jobs and attracting visitors throughout the year. Industry stakeholders had expressed concerns that sudden pricing changes could create uncertainty for restaurants, bars and entertainment venues already managing rising operating costs.
Government officials said maintaining the current pricing framework will allow businesses to continue planning with confidence while ensuring customers are not faced with unexpected increases.
The announcement comes as Alberta prepares for a busy summer tourism season, including major events such as the Calgary Stampede, which draws large crowds from across Canada and abroad. Provincial leaders noted that a thriving hospitality sector is essential to supporting tourism, local employment and economic activity.
Nally also called on municipal authorities to work closely with business owners and event organizers on issues affecting entertainment venues and tourism-related activities. He stressed the importance of policies that encourage growth and support local industries.
The government said it remains committed to reducing regulatory burdens and creating conditions that help businesses succeed while preserving a competitive and consumer-friendly marketplace.
With the reversal now in effect, bars and restaurants across Alberta will continue operating under the existing alcohol pricing rules as the province moves forward with its broader efforts to support the hospitality sector.
