Calgary (Rajeev Sharma): Alberta’s government is providing $4.9 million to First Nations and First Nations education authorities operating on-reserve schools to expand access to specialized learning and mental health supports for students.
The funding is being delivered through the Specialized Learning and Mental Health Supports Grant, with the province saying the investment will help schools respond to the needs of students in their own communities.
The grant can be used for a range of initiatives, including mental health screening and assessments, staff training, mental health education, wellness navigators, specialized instruction and programs designed to create safer and more supportive learning environments.
Education and Childcare Minister Demetrios Nicolaides said strengthening mental health services in schools can help improve student confidence, engagement and overall well-being.
Support for rural and remote schools
The funding is also intended to help First Nations school authorities manage the rising costs associated with providing specialized services, particularly in rural and remote communities where access to trained professionals can be more challenging.
Indigenous Relations Minister Rajan Sawhney said having appropriate services available closer to where students live can create additional opportunities for them both inside and outside the classroom.
School officials have also highlighted the importance of culturally connected support. At Whitefish Lake First Nation, funding will help strengthen mental wellness initiatives involving Elders and Knowledge Keepers, as well as opportunities for land-based learning.
At Kee Tas Kee Now Tribal Education Authority, the funding will support initiatives including mental health literacy, family liaison services and other specialized professional supports.
Additional $101 million for student programs
The latest investment comes alongside broader funding announced through Budget 2026.
Alberta is providing almost $101 million to school boards through the First Nations, Métis and Inuit Grant during the current school year. The funding supports programs intended to improve educational outcomes for First Nations, Inuit and Métis students.
The province says the combined investments are aimed at strengthening educational and mental health supports while helping students remain connected to their families, cultures and communities.
