CALGARY ( Rajeev Sharma): Alberta Health Services (AHS) and public health officials are investigating three cases of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) associated with exposure to the water facilities at Prairie Winds Park in Calgary.
According to public health information, individuals who visited the spray park or wading pool between July 25 and August 4 may have been exposed to the bacteria. The investigation is continuing to determine the circumstances surrounding the cases and whether there are any additional infections connected to the facility.
As a precautionary measure, the City of Calgary-operated spray park and wading pool have been temporarily closed for approximately one week. The closure will allow for deep cleaning, water testing and further investigation by public health officials.
Health officials are urging anyone who visited the facility during the exposure period to remain alert for symptoms associated with STEC infection. These can include diarrhea, severe abdominal or stomach cramps and other gastrointestinal symptoms. Individuals who develop concerning symptoms are advised to contact their healthcare provider or Health Link at 811.
Public health officials are also reminding residents to practice frequent and thorough handwashing with soap and water, particularly after using recreational water facilities and before preparing or eating food.
AHS and public health officials are continuing their investigation. The closure is being described as a precautionary measure while testing, cleaning and assessment are carried out.
