Chandigarh (Balwinder Singh): The Haryana government has brought beekeeping under the Mukhyamantri Bagwani Bima Yojana, extending insurance protection to beekeepers against losses caused by natural disasters, fire, transportation accidents and disease outbreaks.
Announcing the decision in Chandigarh on October 27, Haryana Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Shyam Singh Rana said the move was aimed at reducing the financial risks faced by farmers and entrepreneurs engaged in beekeeping.
Under the scheme, losses caused by beehive boxes and colonies being submerged during floods, destroyed in fires or damaged in transportation accidents will be covered. For transportation-related claims, the accident must occur within Haryana and an official First Information Report (FIR) or Daily Diary Report (DDR) must be registered.
The scheme also provides for compensation in cases of losses caused by epidemics affecting bees.
Haryana Beekeeping Insurance: Eligibility And Registration Rules
Rana said a maximum of 250 bee colonies and 250 boxes per beekeeper would be eligible for coverage under the scheme.
Beekeepers must register under the Bhavantar Bharpai Yojana-Honey to avail themselves of the insurance benefits. They must also provide the Bhavantar Bharpai Yojana unit number for every box, as specified by the government.
The eligibility and registration requirements are intended to identify beneficiaries and link the insured colonies and boxes to the scheme’s records.
Insurance Premium And Compensation Amount
According to the state government’s announcement, the insurance fee has been fixed at Rs 50 per bee colony and Rs 50 per box. The stated insurance amount is Rs 1,250 per colony and Rs 1,250 per box.
The government has also specified a maximum insurance amount of Rs 3,12,500 per colony and Rs 3,12,500 per box. Beekeepers should confirm the applicable coverage and claim conditions with the Horticulture Department before enrolling.
The inclusion of beekeeping expands the range of horticulture-related activities covered under Haryana’s insurance initiative and is intended to provide financial support when specified risks damage beekeeping assets.
Where Can Beekeepers Get More Information?
The Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister urged beekeepers to make use of the scheme and contact their district horticulture officer for detailed information about registration, eligibility and claims.
They can also seek assistance through the Haryana Horticulture Department’s toll-free helpline at 1800-180-2021.
The announcement is part of the state government’s efforts to provide additional financial protection to people engaged in agriculture and allied activities.
