Calgary (Rajeev Sharma): Alberta is marking National Forest Week by highlighting the economic, environmental and recreational importance of the province’s forests, as well as ongoing efforts to manage wildfire risks.
Minister of Forestry and Parks Todd Loewen said Alberta’s forests are closely connected to the province’s identity and play an important role in supporting communities, businesses and the broader economy.
More than half of Alberta is covered by forested public land, according to the province. These areas support more than 40,000 jobs while providing opportunities for local businesses and contributing to communities across Alberta.
Loewen emphasized the importance of sustainable forest management, describing it as a long-term effort to responsibly use forest resources, renew them and respond to changing environmental conditions.
Beyond their economic contribution, Alberta’s forests provide wildlife habitat, support watersheds and help maintain healthy ecosystems. They are also widely used for outdoor activities such as camping, hiking, hunting and fishing.
The minister also highlighted the Alberta Wildfire Mitigation Strategy, a long-term provincial initiative aimed at reducing the impacts of wildfires on forests, communities, homes and critical infrastructure.
The strategy includes active forest-management measures designed to reduce the buildup of forest fuels that can contribute to wildfire risks. Loewen said continued progress will require cooperation among governments, industry, communities and Albertans.
As National Forest Week continues, the minister encouraged Albertans to spend time outdoors and experience the province’s forests, while recognizing their contribution to communities, the environment and Alberta’s future.
