Calgary, Alberta (Rajeev Sharma): Alberta’s government is putting more than $15 million into a new group of Calgary-based technology projects as it looks to accelerate economic growth, strengthen industries and support efforts to cut emissions.
The funding, announced on August 24 through the Technology Innovation and Emissions Reduction (TIER) fund, will support seven projects covering sectors including energy, agriculture, manufacturing, critical minerals and waste management.
The investment is designed to help companies move promising technologies beyond the development stage, allowing them to test, expand and eventually bring their products to market.
Calgary Companies to Receive Support for Technology Development
The projects reflect the wide range of technology being developed by Calgary innovators.
Among the initiatives is a large-scale project focused on recycling used motor oil, along with technologies aimed at lowering emissions from agriculture. Other projects involve methane monitoring and reduction, advanced materials for nuclear energy and batteries, and drone-based systems designed to make powerline maintenance safer and more efficient.
Another project is developing a process for producing asphalt from bitumen using electricity rather than relying on water or heat. The technology could have implications for an industry that depends heavily on asphalt for road construction and maintenance.

Alberta Environment and Protected Areas Minister Grant Hunter said the province’s innovators are developing ideas that could have practical benefits for industries and communities.

Qube Technologies is another Calgary-based company benefiting from the investment.
Its technology is designed to help energy operators identify methane emissions in real time. The company said the funding will help accelerate field deployment and expand adoption of its emissions-monitoring technology.
CEO Alex MacGregor described the support as important in moving the company’s system from development into larger-scale deployment.
Methane reduction has become an important area of focus for the energy industry because methane is a potent greenhouse gas. Technologies that can identify leaks quickly may allow operators to respond sooner and reduce emissions.
