Delhi-NCR Rain Chaos: Homes Flooded, Roads Submerged as IMD Warns of More Heavy Showers

Delhi (Rajeev Sharma): Delhi-NCR is once again battling the impact of intense monsoon rainfall, with waterlogging, traffic disruptions and flooding reported across several parts of the region. The fresh spell has raised concerns among residents, particularly in areas where overflowing drains and accumulated rainwater have entered homes.

The weather situation remains unsettled on August 25, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting more rainfall and thunderstorms across Delhi and neighbouring parts of the National Capital Region.

Heavy Rain Brings Delhi-NCR to a Standstill

A powerful spell of rain on Monday left several roads across Delhi and NCR heavily waterlogged. Commuters struggled to navigate flooded stretches, while traffic movement slowed dramatically in multiple areas.

The latest episode has once again exposed the difficulties faced by the capital during periods of intense rainfall. In some residential neighbourhoods, residents have reported rain and drain water reaching homes, adding to the problems caused by flooded streets.

The situation has also affected neighbouring Gurugram, where several roads were inundated and traffic was severely disrupted.

IMD Issues Fresh Rain Warning

The IMD has warned that the weather could remain difficult through Tuesday. Moderate rainfall is expected at many places in Delhi, while isolated areas could receive heavy to extremely heavy showers. Thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds are also possible.

The continuing alert means residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas may have to remain particularly cautious as another spell of rain could worsen existing waterlogging.

The IMD’s latest national bulletin also indicates continued isolated rainfall activity over Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi in the coming days.

Waterlogging Revives Questions Over Delhi’s Drains

For residents dealing with flooded homes and streets, the latest rainfall has brought back a familiar question: can Delhi’s drainage infrastructure cope with increasingly intense bursts of rain?

Monday’s downpour resulted in extensive water accumulation despite repeated claims of pre-monsoon drain cleaning. The disruption has renewed criticism of the city’s drainage preparedness and the speed at which floodwater can be cleared from affected neighbourhoods.

When drains become overwhelmed, accumulated water can quickly spill onto roads and into nearby residential areas. Apart from damaging property, stagnant and contaminated water can create additional health and sanitation concerns for residents.

Flights and Road Travel Also Hit

The rain has disrupted more than just local traffic. Adverse weather conditions at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport forced 15 Delhi-bound flights to be diverted on Monday.

Airlines also issued travel advisories as thunderstorms, heavy rainfall and poor weather conditions affected flight operations.

For people travelling by road, the situation has been equally difficult, with long traffic queues reported on several important routes across Delhi-NCR.

Gurugram Turns to Work-From-Home Advisory

The impact of the weather prompted authorities in Gurugram to take additional precautions. The District Disaster Management Authority advised offices to adopt work-from-home arrangements on August 25 following heavy rainfall and widespread waterlogging.

Educational institutions were also advised to conduct classes online amid concerns over road conditions and commuter safety.

The move reflects the scale of disruption caused by the latest rainfall, particularly in parts of the NCR where flooding has severely affected daily movement.

Residents Face Another Difficult Day

With more rain possible, residents are being urged to avoid unnecessary travel during intense showers and remain cautious around flooded roads, open drains and areas with stagnant water.

The latest weather spell is also likely to keep civic agencies busy as they work to clear waterlogged roads and restore normal traffic movement.

For Delhi-NCR, however, the immediate concern remains the possibility that another round of heavy rain could deepen the problems already created by Monday’s downpour.
