MEA Stresses Mutual Respect in Diplomacy Amid Political Controversy Over Rahul Gandhi and Sandeep Dikshit Remarks

New Delhi (Gurpreet Singh): The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) emphasized the importance of maintaining mutual respect and decorum in diplomatic discourse on Friday, amid an escalating political controversy surrounding Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s remarks on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s diplomatic engagements and subsequent comments regarding Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Addressing media queries during a press briefing, MEA official spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal underlined the depth and multifaceted expansion of bilateral ties between New Delhi and Rome in recent years.

Jaiswal noted that India shares robust relations with Italy and that ongoing diplomatic engagements between sovereign nations must consistently be anchored in mutual understanding and respect. While refraining from making direct remarks on the domestic political exchange, the external affairs ministry highlighted that diplomatic conventions necessitate dignified interactions concerning international leadership and foreign partnerships.

The controversy erupted after Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, took a critical swipe at the Modi administration’s foreign policy approach during a party event. In the course of his address, Gandhi embraced former Congress MP Sandeep Dikshit, following which Dikshit made reference to Prime Minister Meloni. The exchange quickly drew strong political condemnation from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, which criticized the comments as improper and disrespectful toward a visiting foreign dignitary and key international partner.

Diplomatic relations between India and Italy have experienced substantial growth in strategic, economic, and technological spheres in recent years. In light of these expanding bilateral engagements, the MEA’s response underscored the need to insulate foreign relations and diplomatic decorum from domestic political friction.
