Chandigarh (Gurpreet Singh): Weather conditions across Punjab remained unsettled on Saturday, with the Meteorological Centre in Chandigarh warning of heavy rain, thunderstorms and lightning in three districts. Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr and Rupnagar have been placed under a yellow alert as the monsoon continues to remain active over the region.
The weather office has forecast light to moderate showers at isolated places elsewhere in Punjab. Chandigarh is also expected to remain partly cloudy, with the possibility of one or two spells of rain or thundershowers during the day.
The ongoing rainfall has brought some relief from the heat, with temperatures dipping across the region. Chandigarh’s maximum temperature was recorded 1.2°C lower than the previous reading and stood 3.4°C below normal. Bathinda remained the warmest place in the state, recording a maximum of 34°C.
Ludhiana receives highest rainfall
Several parts of Punjab witnessed showers on August 8. Between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm, Ludhiana received the highest rainfall at 6 mm.
Sangrur recorded 4 mm, while Patiala and Faridkot each received 3 mm. Amritsar recorded 0.8 mm, whereas Pathankot, Fatehgarh Sahib and Ferozepur received around 1 mm of rain each.
Light precipitation was also reported from the Pathankot AWS, Thein Dam and Hoshiarpur, where around 0.5 mm was recorded. Chandigarh Airport registered only trace rainfall during the period.
More rain possible till August 12
Surendra Paul, Director of the Meteorological Centre, Chandigarh, said the monsoon trough remains positioned close to its normal location and continues to influence weather conditions over northern India.
As a result, several parts of Punjab may receive light to moderate rainfall over the next 24 hours. Rainfall activity is also expected at some places from August 9 to 12, while another spell could occur on August 14.
A Western Disturbance is currently active as well, increasing the possibility of thunderstorms and lightning along with isolated spells of heavy rain.
People in the districts covered by the yellow alert have been advised to remain cautious during thunderstorms and avoid exposed areas during lightning activity.
