Washington (Rajeev Sharma): Fresh uncertainty has emerged over the possibility of a diplomatic breakthrough between the United States and Iran after President Donald Trump claimed that negotiations were in progress, while Tehran firmly rejected the assertion, saying no talks have been scheduled.
Speaking during an event at the White House, Trump said Iran had sought discussions through regional intermediaries and described the current phase as a crucial opportunity for Tehran to reach an agreement. He warned that the country now faced a choice between accepting a deal or confronting serious consequences.
Tehran Rejects US Claims
Iran, however, dismissed the US President’s remarks. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei said there were no negotiations with Washington, nor were any meetings planned in the near future.
He clarified that Iranian officials were not engaged in talks with the United States and added that the only diplomatic engagement currently underway involves discussions with Oman concerning the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, meanwhile, is reported to be in Iraq on a religious visit.
Trump Accuses Iran of Contradictory Approach
Hours after his remarks, Trump took to his social media platform to accuse Iran’s leadership of adopting a “duplicitous” approach. He alleged that while Tehran publicly denies negotiations, it has privately sought further dialogue.
The US President also reiterated that the United States would continue to maintain a strong military presence around the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global shipping corridor, and insisted that Iran would eventually have to agree to US demands or face what he termed as “total surrender.”
Strait of Hormuz Remains Key Flashpoint
The strategic waterway continues to remain at the centre of tensions between the two countries. The route is critical for global oil and natural gas exports, and any disruption there has the potential to impact international energy markets.
Washington maintains that Iran should guarantee unrestricted navigation through the strait, while Tehran argues that it retains sovereign authority over activities in the region and has not agreed to any arrangement limiting its control.
Diplomatic Outlook Remains Uncertain
The conflicting statements from both capitals underscore the lack of progress toward easing months of hostilities. Although Trump recently said he had halted planned military action to leave room for diplomacy, Iranian officials continue to insist that no negotiations with the United States are taking place.
The latest exchange suggests that despite repeated references to dialogue, the gap between Washington and Tehran remains wide, leaving the future of any potential agreement uncertain as regional tensions continue.
