Washington (Rajeev Sharma): The United States military is reportedly reassessing its approach toward Iran, with the US Central Command (CENTCOM) inviting personnel to suggest new and unconventional strategies to deal with Tehran. The move comes amid growing indications that existing military measures have not produced the desired strategic results.
According to a CNN report, CENTCOM’s intelligence division recently circulated an internal email encouraging military experts to contribute innovative ideas on how to intensify pressure on Iran. Officials described the initiative as part of a broader review of operational planning as Washington evaluates its next course of action.
Unusual Call for New Strategies
The reported email sought proposals beyond traditional military tactics, an uncommon step that reflects the challenges facing the US administration in its ongoing confrontation with Iran.
Responding to the report, CENTCOM spokesperson Captain Timothy Hawkins said the command has a long-standing culture of encouraging fresh thinking and operational innovation. He added that senior leadership regularly invites input from personnel across different levels to strengthen military planning.
Military Campaign Yet to Deliver Breakthrough
The strategic review comes after weeks of US military operations targeting Iranian-linked infrastructure and capabilities across the region. Despite repeated warnings from President Donald Trump about possible large-scale strikes, the conflict has yet to produce a decisive breakthrough or bring Tehran back to negotiations on Washington’s terms.
Reports suggest Trump recently considered additional military action before opting to pause further escalation following diplomatic efforts by regional allies.
Underground Targets Present Major Challenge
Sources familiar with the planning process told CNN that American military officials have examined potential strikes on heavily fortified Iranian facilities believed to contain nuclear-related infrastructure.
However, analysts reportedly believe many of these sites are buried so deep underground that conventional airstrikes alone would have limited effectiveness. Any attempt to completely destroy such facilities could require ground operations, an option US officials are said to be reluctant to pursue because of the significant military and political risks involved.
Focus Shifts to Limited Military Action
With more aggressive options carrying substantial risks, the report indicates that the US administration may instead be considering smaller-scale operations aimed at demonstrating military capability without triggering a wider conflict.
Officials quoted in the report suggested that while Washington wants to maintain pressure on Iran, the White House also remains interested in reaching a negotiated settlement if conditions permit.
Intelligence Warns of Air Power’s Limits
The reassessment follows intelligence evaluations indicating that continued airstrikes alone are unlikely to force Iran to alter its negotiating position. Senior US military leaders have also publicly acknowledged that air campaigns, while effective in certain situations, cannot by themselves achieve all of Washington’s long-term strategic objectives.
