Commonwealth Games 2026: India Enjoys Medal Rush as Sharmila Dhankar Wins Historic Gold

Glasgow (Rajeev Sharma): India continued its impressive run at the Commonwealth Games 2026, adding a flurry of medals on Day 5 to take its overall tally to 10. The highlight of the day came from Sharmila Dhankar, who delivered a record-breaking performance to clinch the country’s second gold medal of the Games.

Competing in the women’s para shot put F57 event, Sharmila registered a best effort of 9.81 metres, securing the gold and etching her name in history as the first Indian para-athlete to win a Commonwealth Games gold medal in athletics.

India’s success in the same event continued later when Shilpa K. Shyla, who had initially finished outside the podium places, was upgraded to a bronze medal after the disqualification of another competitor following a review of the results.

The athletics contingent celebrated another milestone as Sarvesh Anil Kushare claimed the silver medal in the men’s high jump. His podium finish marked the first time an Indian athlete had secured silver in the event at the Commonwealth Games.

Weightlifting once again proved to be India’s strongest discipline. Valluri Ajaya Babu finished with silver in the men’s 79kg category after an intense contest that was decided by the final clean and jerk attempts. He narrowly missed the gold medal by just one kilogram in total lift.

Earlier, Gyaneshwari Yadav earned a silver medal in the women’s 53kg event, while Bindyarani Devi added a bronze in the women’s 58kg category, ensuring India maintained its steady medal momentum.

Indian boxers also produced encouraging performances, with Sachin Siwach, Ankush Panghal, and Sakshi Chaudhary advancing to the quarterfinals in their respective categories. Their progress has kept India’s hopes alive for additional medals in the boxing competition.

At the close of Day 5, India had amassed 10 medals—two gold, five silver and three bronze—while another podium finish has already been assured through boxing.

With athletes continuing to deliver standout performances across athletics, para sports, weightlifting and boxing, India’s campaign in Glasgow is gathering momentum, raising expectations of an even bigger medal haul as the Commonwealth Games enter their decisive stages.
