Edmonton (Rajeev Sharma): Canadian police have charged a 22-year-old man with second-degree murder following the death of a young Punjab-origin woman in Edmonton, Alberta, in a case authorities are investigating as an incident of intimate partner violence.
The victim, identified as Damanpreet Kaur, 23, was discovered with severe injuries after emergency services responded to a residence in Edmonton’s Silver Berry neighbourhood earlier this month. Officers had received a call regarding an unconscious woman under suspicious circumstances at a home near Silver Berry Road and 28A Avenue.
Paramedics provided immediate medical care before shifting Kaur to hospital, where she remained in critical condition for several days. She later succumbed to her injuries on July 12.
Autopsy Reveals Cause of Death
Following a post-mortem examination, investigators confirmed that Kaur’s death was a homicide. Police later disclosed that she died due to strangulation.
After completing the initial investigation, Edmonton Police arrested Ritish Kumar, 22, and charged him with second-degree murder. Authorities believe the accused and the victim were in a live-in relationship at the time of the incident.
Police have stated that the case is being treated as an intimate partner homicide and have indicated that no additional suspects are being sought.
Community Rallies Behind Victim’s Family
The incident has sent shockwaves through the Indo-Canadian community, particularly among Punjabi residents in Alberta. Friends and community members have launched an online fundraising campaign to help Kaur’s family repatriate her remains to India for her final rites.
The campaign has received support from members of the local community, who have expressed grief over the tragic loss of the young woman.
Renewed Focus on Domestic Violence
The case has once again highlighted concerns surrounding intimate partner violence in Canada. Advocacy groups continue to stress the importance of early intervention, stronger victim support systems and greater public awareness to prevent such tragedies.
Investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident as legal proceedings against the accused move forward.
