Shimla (Rajeev Sharma): The southwest monsoon has regained momentum across Himachal Pradesh, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warning of heavy rainfall in several parts of the state on Saturday. The weather office has issued a Yellow Alert for nine districts, cautioning residents about the possibility of weather-related incidents, including landslides and flash floods.
The alert covers Mandi, Kangra, Kullu, Shimla, Solan, Sirmaur, Bilaspur, Hamirpur and Una, where isolated spells of intense rain are likely over the next 24 hours. Several locations also witnessed overnight showers, indicating an active monsoon system over the region.
Officials have warned that continuous rainfall could trigger slope failures, falling rocks and sudden flooding in low-lying areas. As a precaution, people have been advised to avoid travelling through vulnerable hill roads unless absolutely necessary, as heavy rain may affect traffic movement and lead to temporary road closures.
The administration has also appealed to tourists visiting the hill state to remain cautious while travelling and to avoid stopping near rivers, streams and waterfalls, where water levels can rise rapidly during heavy showers.
Authorities said emergency response teams have been placed on alert, while district administrations are closely monitoring weather conditions. Residents have been urged to follow official advisories and cooperate with local agencies in case of any emergency.
The weather department noted that while rainfall activity has increased, temperatures remain relatively high in some parts of the state. Una recorded the highest daytime temperature at 38.6 degrees Celsius on Friday, making it the hottest location in Himachal Pradesh.
With monsoon conditions expected to persist over the coming days, meteorologists anticipate intermittent rainfall across many districts. Officials believe the fresh spell will help replenish water sources but have cautioned that prolonged precipitation could also increase the likelihood of weather-related disruptions.
The IMD has advised people to stay updated through official forecasts and avoid risky locations during periods of heavy rain, particularly in districts placed under the weather alert.
