Washington, DC (Rajeev Sharma): The United States has sought to allay concerns among Indian professionals regarding tightening immigration procedures, stating that its visa framework is based on uniform enforcement rather than policies directed at any specific nation.
Addressing questions on the issue, US State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott said the administration’s objective is to ensure that immigration regulations are implemented consistently for applicants worldwide. He stressed that India is not being singled out under the current visa regime.
Pigott explained that the government has moved away from what it considers uneven enforcement practices of the past and is now applying the same legal standards to every visa applicant, regardless of nationality.
The clarification comes amid uncertainty among thousands of Indian professionals employed in the United States under H-1B and other work visa categories. Many have expressed concern over increased scrutiny of applications and stricter compliance measures introduced during President Donald Trump’s second term.
The spokesperson said the United States continues to value skilled workers who contribute to innovation, investment, trade and economic growth. He added that immigration policies are intended to support legitimate business requirements while also protecting employment opportunities for American workers.
According to Pigott, this approach is similar to that adopted by many countries, where governments seek to balance the need for international talent with the interests of their domestic workforce.
He also emphasised that the US remains committed to working with partner countries to facilitate travel for professionals, investors and businesses whenever it serves mutual economic interests.
The H-1B programme remains one of the most widely used employment visa categories for Indian professionals, particularly in the technology, engineering, healthcare and financial sectors. Over the years, Indian nationals have accounted for a significant share of H-1B approvals, making developments in US immigration policy closely watched by both employees and employers.
While acknowledging that immigration enforcement has become stricter, the State Department maintained that the underlying legal framework applies equally to all applicants and is not designed to disadvantage citizens of any particular country.
The remarks come as the Trump administration continues to pursue a tougher immigration agenda, even as businesses reliant on highly skilled foreign workers call for greater certainty and efficiency in the visa process.
