Shimla (Rajeev Sharma): Himachal Pradesh is expected to witness another spell of widespread rainfall over the coming days as the southwest monsoon continues to remain active across the state. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has advised people to remain cautious, warning that persistent showers may trigger landslides, flash floods, and traffic disruptions in vulnerable regions.
According to the latest forecast, moderate to heavy rain is likely in several districts through July 12, particularly in the mid and lower hill regions. Officials said the weather system could intensify at isolated locations, increasing the possibility of slope failures and overflowing seasonal streams.
Road connectivity affected in several areas
Continuous rainfall has already disrupted movement in parts of the state. Mudslides, falling rocks, and debris have slowed traffic on multiple roads, while local authorities have deployed machinery to clear blocked stretches and restore connectivity.
Several rural routes have become difficult to navigate due to water accumulation and damaged road surfaces. Officials have urged motorists to avoid unnecessary travel, especially during periods of intense rainfall.
River levels under close watch
The administration is also monitoring the water levels of major rivers and tributaries, including the Beas and its feeder streams, as continuous rainfall in the upper catchment areas has increased inflow.
People living near riverbanks have been advised to stay alert and avoid venturing close to fast-flowing water bodies. Tourists visiting riverside destinations have also been asked to follow safety instructions issued by local authorities.
Risk of landslides remains high
Experts have warned that saturated soil in hilly terrain significantly raises the likelihood of landslides and rockfalls. District administrations have identified sensitive locations where emergency teams have been placed on standby to respond quickly in case of road blockages or other incidents.
Officials said even brief spells of intense rain could lead to sudden flash floods in mountain streams and low-lying areas.
Public urged to remain cautious
The state administration has appealed to residents and visitors to monitor official weather bulletins and avoid travelling to landslide-prone zones unless absolutely necessary. Emergency response teams remain on alert, while departments concerned have been instructed to maintain round-the-clock surveillance of vulnerable areas.
With the monsoon expected to remain active for the next few days, authorities have stressed that public cooperation and adherence to advisories will be crucial in minimising risks and ensuring safety during the ongoing wet spell.
