Amritsar (Gurpreet Singh): A video from the Golden Temple in Amritsar has gone viral after a foreign couple was requested to change their attire before entering the revered Sikh shrine. The visitors, both dressed in shorts, were politely informed that the temple’s dress code requires everyone to wear full-length clothing while inside the premises.

The couple had arrived at the entrance with the intention of offering prayers when a Sikh volunteer approached them and explained the guidelines followed at the shrine. The interaction remained calm and respectful throughout, with the volunteer patiently describing the rules that apply to every visitor.

During the conversation, the woman asked whether a ticket was needed to enter the Golden Temple. She was told that entry is completely free and that the only requirement is to observe the religious code of conduct, including dressing modestly and covering the head before entering.

The tourist then pointed towards her companion and asked if the same rules applied to him as well. The volunteer clarified that the regulations are identical for all visitors, regardless of gender, nationality or religion, and advised them to obtain full-length trousers from nearby shops before returning.

The couple reportedly acknowledged the instructions and agreed to follow the guidelines.

The Golden Temple, one of the most visited religious sites in India, has several information boards installed around the complex reminding devotees and tourists about the expected decorum. Visitors are informed that clothing such as shorts, mini-skirts and other attire considered inappropriate is not allowed inside the holy shrine. Head coverings are also mandatory before entering.

The video has generated widespread reactions on social media, with many users appreciating the respectful way in which the rules were explained. Others pointed out that places of worship across different religions have specific customs and dress codes that visitors are expected to honour as a mark of respect.

The incident has once again highlighted the Golden Temple’s long-standing practice of welcoming people from all backgrounds while ensuring that its traditions and religious etiquette are followed equally by everyone.
