Chandigarh (Gurpreet Singh): Punjab is expected to witness another active spell of monsoon rainfall as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast widespread showers across the state. A yellow alert has been issued for several districts, while Chandigarh is also likely to receive rain accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds.
The recent showers have brought down temperatures across much of Punjab, providing relief from the intense heat that gripped the region over the past few weeks. Despite the cooler conditions, humidity continues to remain high, keeping the weather uncomfortable during the daytime.
Temperature Falls as Rain Covers Several Regions
Rainfall recorded in different parts of Punjab over the past 24 hours contributed to a noticeable decline in maximum temperatures. Weather officials said the mercury is now hovering below the seasonal average in many districts, and similar conditions are expected to continue if rainfall persists.
Several areas witnessed light to moderate showers, while a few locations received heavier rainfall, improving overall weather conditions.
Electricity Demand Stays Elevated
Even with lower temperatures, Punjab’s electricity consumption remained above 15,000 MW due to high moisture levels in the atmosphere. The use of cooling appliances has continued as residents deal with humid weather despite intermittent rainfall.
Power utilities maintained supply by combining electricity generated within the state with allocations received from the central grid.
Water Levels Improve in Major Reservoirs
Monsoon rainfall in the catchment regions has increased inflows into key reservoirs under the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB). Authorities are keeping a close watch on water storage and controlled releases to maintain reservoir safety while ensuring adequate water availability for irrigation.
The improved water reserves are expected to benefit farmers during the ongoing agricultural season, particularly paddy cultivation.
Rain Forecast to Persist Until Midweek
According to the IMD, favourable monsoon conditions are likely to keep rainfall activity active over Punjab during the next few days. Heavy showers may occur at isolated places, particularly in districts located near the foothills, while most other areas are expected to receive light to moderate rain.
The department has advised people to remain alert during periods of heavy rainfall, avoid flooded roads and low-lying areas, and exercise caution during thunderstorms and strong winds. Authorities are also monitoring the situation to respond promptly to any weather-related disruptions.
