Calgary (Rajeev Sharma): The Government of Alberta has released the latest classroom complexity team allocations for the 2026–27 academic year, outlining how newly created support teams will be distributed among school authorities across the province.
The allocations form part of a previously announced $100-million investment aimed at helping schools manage increasingly complex classroom environments and provide additional assistance to both students and teachers.
Under the funding package, $75 million has been earmarked for the creation of 223 new classroom complexity teams. Of these, 160 teams will serve students in Grades 7 to 12, while 63 teams will be assigned to Kindergarten through Grade 6 schools.
The remaining $25 million will be directed toward expanding access to specialized educational supports in rural and remote communities, while also providing targeted professional development for educators dealing with diverse learning and behavioural challenges.
Classroom complexity teams are designed to work within schools, offering practical support to teachers in managing behavioural issues, learning difficulties and classroom safety concerns. Officials say the initiative is intended to strengthen inclusive learning environments while ensuring students receive timely intervention when additional support is required.
According to the provincial government, every public, separate and francophone school authority in Alberta will receive at least one additional classroom complexity team. Larger school divisions will receive a greater number of teams based on student enrolment and the level of classroom complexity within their schools.
The newly published allocation list details the number of elementary and secondary support teams assigned to each school authority, allowing schools to prepare for the upcoming academic session.
The government said the expanded network of classroom complexity teams reflects its broader commitment to improving educational outcomes, enhancing teacher support and ensuring schools are better equipped to respond to the evolving needs of students across Alberta.
