Uttarakhand (Rajeev Sharma): A major security operation was launched at the Uttarakhand-Himachal Pradesh border after a group of Nihang Sikhs attempting to travel towards Hemkund Sahib crossed police barricades at the Kulhal checkpoint, leading to a brief confrontation with security personnel.
Authorities had already heightened surveillance in the Vikasnagar region following intelligence inputs that members of the group, travelling from Punjab, intended to enter Uttarakhand. The border was secured with multiple barricades, riot-control units and senior administrative officers to manage the anticipated gathering.
Despite repeated appeals from officials, a section of the procession reportedly forced its way through the barricades and continued towards the hill state. Police officials said the situation was brought under control without allowing it to spiral into a larger law-and-order issue, though security deployment has since been intensified across sensitive stretches.
Before the standoff, district officials held discussions with representatives of the group in an attempt to defuse tensions. However, negotiations failed after the protesters maintained that they would not suspend their journey until four Nihang Sikhs arrested in connection with an earlier incident in Karnaprayag were released.
Members of the group insisted that their objective was to undertake a peaceful pilgrimage to Hemkund Sahib and resolve the ongoing dispute through dialogue. They claimed they had no intention of creating unrest but wanted assurances regarding the legal proceedings involving the detained individuals.
The latest development is linked to a clash that took place in Karnaprayag earlier this month, where an altercation between local residents and a group of Nihang Sikhs allegedly turned violent. Following the incident, police registered a criminal case and arrested four individuals. Sections of the Sikh community have since alleged that the action taken by authorities was unfair and one-sided.
Officials confirmed that additional police personnel have been deployed at key entry points and along the pilgrimage route as a precautionary measure. Surveillance has also been increased to ensure that no untoward incident occurs while the situation remains under close watch.
Police have appealed to all parties to cooperate with the administration and allow the legal process to take its course. Authorities reiterated that maintaining public order remains their top priority while ensuring that religious sentiments are respected within the framework of the law.
The incident has once again highlighted the delicate balance between managing religious processions and maintaining security, with officials continuing efforts to prevent further escalation through dialogue and coordinated policing.
