London: A tragic railway collision near Bedford, north of London, left one person dead and dozens injured after two passenger trains crashed into each other, prompting one of the region’s largest emergency responses in recent months.
British Transport Police confirmed that the accident occurred on a section of track south of Bedford involving two East Midlands Railway services. Rescue personnel, police officers and medical teams quickly reached the site to assist passengers and secure the area.
Health authorities reported that one individual died at the scene. Eleven passengers sustained life-threatening injuries, while another 22 suffered serious wounds. More than 50 others were treated for relatively minor injuries following the impact.
Eyewitness footage circulating online showed the leading coach of one train embedded into the rear section of another. Despite the force of the collision, the coaches largely remained upright, allowing rescue teams to evacuate passengers without a major derailment.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed sorrow over the loss of life and extended his support to those affected, while praising emergency responders for their swift efforts under difficult circumstances.
The East of England Ambulance Service mobilised significant resources, deploying over 20 ambulances along with six air ambulance helicopters to transport the injured to nearby hospitals.

One passenger, who identified himself as a doctor on social media, described experiencing a violent jolt before noticing that part of the train had left the tracks. He said he escaped with minor injuries but described the scene as chaotic.
