New Delhi (Gurpreet Singh): Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk announced on Tuesday his support for a public campaign demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Delivering an ultimatum through a video message and social media posts, Wangchuk stated he will travel to Delhi to join a June 6 demonstration led by the Cockroach Janta Party if the central government fails to take decisive administrative action by June 5. The high-profile endorsement provides significant momentum to a youth-driven movement that has expanded rapidly across digital platforms over recent weeks.
Wangchuk, a veteran educator with four decades of experience in the sector, framed his decision as a matter of democratic accountability rather than political opposition. He emphasized that the repeating operational disruptions across major national screening tests directly threaten the future of millions of student aspirants. In his public statement, the activist noted that ministers in functional democracies must accept personal and systemic responsibility when large-scale institutional failures occur under their direct watch, warning that official silence would only deepen public frustration.
The announcement followed a series of digital briefings between Wangchuk and Cockroach Janta Party founder Abhijeet Dipke, who had previously dropped hints regarding an inbound endorsement from a major public figure. Wangchuk confirmed he reviewed data compiled by the digital-first organization before aligning with the movement, stating he is satisfied that the platform reflects genuine citizen anxieties rather than partisan motivations. While recent testing controversies sparked the current agitation, the activist noted that his critique targets a broader, systemic divergence between high-level policy papers and the daily realities of underfunded rural classrooms.
While acknowledging the progressive intent behind frameworks like the National Education Policy and the national development targets set for 2047, Wangchuk argued that execution remains the primary metric of success. Utilizing visual evidence of substandard schooling infrastructure during his address, he questioned how the country could meet its economic potential without fixing its basic educational foundations. He appealed directly to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene, while urging students and citizens to join the planned peaceful demonstration at Jantar Mantar, which coincides with Dipke’s scheduled return to the country to lead the assembly.
