High Court Grants Punjab Government More Time in Majithia Case, Matter to be Heard Again Tomorrow

Gurpreet Singh :- The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Monday heard a petition related to the FIR registered against senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader and former Punjab minister Bikram Singh Majithia at Majitha police station in Amritsar district.

During the proceedings, the Punjab Government sought time till Tuesday to file its response in the matter. Accepting the request, the court adjourned the case and fixed it for further hearing on June 3.

Earlier, the High Court had issued notices to the Punjab Director General of Police, the Senior Superintendent of Police (Rural), Amritsar, and the Station House Officer of Majitha police station on a petition filed by the Shiromani Akali Dal.

Meanwhile, Punjab Police has constituted 12 teams to trace Majithia. Search operations were carried out in Amritsar as well as Chandigarh on Monday in connection with the case.

According to the police, a case was registered on May 31 alleging that Majithia and some of his associates forcibly secured the release of Jobanjit Singh from Majitha police station. Police have also alleged that Majithia attempted to snatch mobile phones from police officials during the incident.

After failing to locate him, the police later issued a Look-Out Circular (LOC) against Majithia to prevent him from leaving the country while the investigation is underway.

In a related development, the Punjab Government on Monday evening removed Amritsar Rural SSP Sohail Qasim Mir from his post.

The Shiromani Akali Dal has challenged the FIR before the High Court and sought legal relief. The matter is scheduled to come up for hearing again on Tuesday, when the Punjab Government is expected to place its response before the court.
