Premier Smith Heads to Quebec to Deepen Economic Ties, Discuss Provincial Autonomy

Calgary (Rajeev Sharma): Alberta Premier Danielle Smith is set to visit Quebec City from June 2 to 4 as part of an effort to strengthen relations between Alberta and Quebec, with discussions expected to focus on economic cooperation, trade opportunities and provincial rights within the Canadian federation.

During the visit, Smith will meet government representatives, business leaders and investors to explore potential partnerships and identify areas where the two provinces can work more closely together. The trip comes at a time when debates surrounding provincial autonomy and the balance of powers between Ottawa and the provinces continue to feature prominently in Canadian political discourse.

A key engagement on the agenda is a bilateral meeting with Christine Fréchette, where both leaders are expected to exchange views on issues affecting their provinces and discuss ways to expand cooperation. Topics likely to be raised include economic development, investment, interprovincial trade and the importance of respecting provincial jurisdiction.

Smith has indicated that Alberta and Quebec share common concerns regarding provincial decision-making authority and the role of provinces within Confederation. She emphasized the importance of fostering a constructive relationship that supports both economic growth and provincial interests.

The Alberta premier will also participate in a keynote address and fireside discussion organized by business and policy groups in Quebec, where she is expected to outline Alberta’s economic priorities and highlight opportunities for collaboration between the two provinces.

The visit will include meetings with officials from Quebec’s National Assembly as well as representatives from major Quebec-based companies and industry organizations. Alberta officials say the trip is intended to build long-term partnerships and encourage greater economic engagement between the provinces while reinforcing dialogue on issues of mutual concern.
