New Road to Improve Access to Chandigarh Airport, Reduce Travel Distance by 8 km

Gurpreet Singh :- Commuters travelling to Chandigarh International Airport will now have a faster and more direct route, with a new connecting road linking the airport corridor to the city network being formally opened on Sunday. The road, developed near the Bawa White House junction, is expected to significantly ease access to the airport while reducing congestion on existing routes.

The new connectivity is set to benefit travellers from Punjab and Haryana, many of whom currently rely on the busy PR-7 corridor to reach the airport. Officials said the road would shorten the travel distance by nearly 8 km and help decongest key traffic bottlenecks along the existing route.

Constructed by GMADA at an estimated cost of ₹125 crore, the 164-foot-wide road provides a direct link between the Sector 65-66 junction and the Airport Terminal Road through Sector 66-A. With the new alignment in place, the distance to the airport is expected to reduce from around 11.6 km to approximately 8.5 km, saving commuters an estimated 15 to 20 minutes during peak hours.

Until now, motorists travelling from Mohali had to take a longer route via Phase XI, the IISER light point and Airport Chowk, often encountering multiple traffic signals and congestion points. Officials believe the new road will improve traffic flow, reduce fuel consumption and enhance overall travel convenience.

The Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport serves as a key aviation hub for Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh. The facility handles thousands of passengers daily and operates domestic flights to major cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Srinagar and Ahmedabad, besides maintaining international connectivity to destinations such as Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Authorities said the new road is expected to strengthen airport accessibility and support the growing passenger traffic at the region’s premier air gateway.
