Punjab and Haryana High Court Stays Chandigarh-Zirakpur Flyover Project

Gurpreet Singh :- The Punjab and Haryana High Court has put a stay on the proposed flyover project from Tribune Chowk to the Zirakpur border, dealing a setback to Chandigarh Administration’s plans to ease traffic congestion on one of the city’s busiest corridors.

A Division Bench headed by Chief Justice Sheel Nagu passed the order on Friday, observing that the proposed flyover on Dakshin Marg was not in conformity with the Chandigarh Master Plan-2031 and, therefore, could not be permitted in its present form.

During the hearing, the court suggested that an underpass could be explored as an alternative solution to address traffic issues in the area. It also directed the administration to ensure that Chandigarh’s unique character, urban design and green cover are preserved while undertaking any future development works.

The flyover project had been conceived as a major infrastructure initiative to tackle persistent traffic bottlenecks between Tribune Chowk and the Zirakpur border. Preliminary work on the project had already commenced after the administration moved forward with the proposal in recent weeks.

The court’s intervention has now put the project on hold, with the administration expected to examine alternative options in line with the city’s planning framework and environmental considerations.
