Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo Chosen to Host 2028 Alberta Summer Games

Calgary (Rajeev Sharma): Northern Alberta will take centre stage in 2028 as the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo prepares to host the upcoming Alberta Summer Games, welcoming thousands of athletes, coaches and visitors from across the province.

The announcement marks the return of the Alberta Summer Games to Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo after more than four decades. The region previously hosted the Alberta Winter Games in 1992 and 2018 and is now set to organise one of the province’s biggest youth multi-sport events.

To support preparations, Alberta’s government has committed $1.15 million in funding to help with planning, transportation, staffing, promotions and overall event management.

Andrew Boitchenko said the Games provide young athletes with an important opportunity to compete at a high level while encouraging sports development across the province.

The 2028 event is expected to attract around 2,600 participants, including athletes, coaches and support personnel, along with families and spectators. Officials believe the Games will also provide a significant boost to tourism and the local economy by drawing visitors from every region of Alberta.

Competitors between the ages of 11 and 16 will participate in multiple sporting disciplines after qualifying through regional competitions. Events are expected to include baseball, rugby, swimming, beach volleyball, mountain biking and several other sports.

Brian Jean said the Games would help showcase the region’s sporting infrastructure and tourism potential on a province-wide stage.

Meanwhile, Tany Yao described the announcement as a major opportunity to highlight the community’s growth, hospitality and enthusiasm for sports.

Sandy Bowman noted that the municipality has extensive experience hosting large-scale events and said preparations are already beginning to ensure a successful tournament.

Organisers stated that further details regarding venues, schedules and volunteer opportunities will be announced in the coming months as planning for the 2028 Alberta Summer Games moves forward.
