Chandigarh: Punjab and Chandigarh continue to reel under intense heatwave conditions, with the Meteorological Department issuing a severe heatwave alert for Tuesday across several districts. However, relief appears to be on the horizon as weather conditions are expected to shift from May 28, bringing chances of rain, thunderstorms and hailstorms across parts of the state.
According to the Chandigarh Meteorological Centre, dry weather prevailed across Punjab during the last 24 hours, with Bathinda recording the highest temperature at 45.8 degrees Celsius, making it one of the hottest locations in the region.
The current weather spell coincides with Nautapa, considered the hottest nine-day period of the summer season, when temperatures generally remain between 40 and 45 degrees Celsius. The prolonged exposure to extreme heat has raised health concerns, with experts warning of dehydration, heat exhaustion, dizziness and heatstroke if precautions are not taken.
Heatwave Warning for Key Districts
A severe heatwave alert has been sounded for Mohali, Patiala, Ludhiana, Bathinda, Mansa and Sangrur for May 27. Meteorologists have cautioned that strong hot winds and harsh sunlight during afternoon hours may increase discomfort and pose health risks, especially for children, senior citizens and outdoor workers.
Weather Likely to Shift from May 28
The weather department has predicted a significant change beginning May 28 and 29, with the possibility of thunderstorms, lightning activity, gusty winds reaching speeds of 60 to 70 kmph, and isolated hailstorms in several districts.
The impact is likely to be more pronounced in Mohali, Patiala, Rupnagar, Hoshiarpur and Gurdaspur, where unstable weather conditions may lead to sudden storms and scattered rainfall.
Mercury May Dip by 6 to 8 Degrees
Officials said light to moderate rainfall expected on May 29 and 30 could bring down temperatures by 6 to 8 degrees Celsius, offering substantial respite from the scorching conditions currently affecting the state.
The expected drop in temperature is likely to provide relief to residents who have been battling an extended spell of oppressive heat over the past several days.
Authorities have advised people to remain indoors during peak afternoon hours, stay hydrated and avoid unnecessary outdoor activity until weather conditions improve later this week.
